A key differentiating factor between Malaysian agricultural titling and other countries is that land allocations by the Malaysian State Governments for agriculture SPECIFICALLY EXCLUDE any Native Claims Land (“NCR”) or kampong (aka village) areas. Irrespective of this, we seek to maintain excellent relations with the local communities around our estates, which is important for both our corporate ethos and Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil ("RSPO") compliance. In the vicinity of the Company’s plantations, we have three communities totaling approximately 200 people.
We have a variety of on-going initiatives for communities in our area including:
- Clean water projects. The Company installed gravity feed water systems for each of the three communities in 2009 and 2H 2010. This was the first time these villages have enjoyed a consistent supply of clean drinking water.
- Provision of medical services. The Company’s Medical Officer regularly visits the villages to provide health and medical services free of charge. Vaccinations for newborn babies, post-natal checks and malaria treatment are just a sample of the services provided. On occasion, we have also provided emergency response and evacuation to regional hospitals in Company vehicles.
- Employment opportunities. We provide employment to all community residents who seek job opportunities with us; at present, we employ approximately 20 individuals from the neighboring communities.
- Subsidized palm oil seedlings. The communities are keen to plant palm oil as they know the Company will be initiating construction of its FFB crushing mill. The mill provides an off-take for their production. The Company provides subsidized palm oil seedlings and planting expertise to the communities.
